1942-1968

This series consists of photographs showing President Franklin D. Roosevelt; President Harry S. Truman; President Dwight D. Eisenhower; President John F. Kennedy; President Lyndon Baines Johnson; and Vice President Richard M. Nixon. The majority of these records relate to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Shown is President Eisenhower with Winston Churchill (79-PR-26); Captain Edward V. Rickenbacker (79-PR-18); and with Vice President Nixon and Mrs. Nixon on November 6, 1958 (79-PR-39). There is one view during Eisenhower's administration that shows Prime Minister Jawaharlah Nehru of India (79-PR-40). There are a few images of President Franklin Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. Those of President Truman include one of the President, Mrs. Bess Truman, and daughter Margaret Truman with actress Margaret O'Brien (79-PR-8) and one of Mrs. Truman with actress Ingrid Bergman (79-PR-9). There are two color photographs by R. L. Knudsen (United States Navy, Office of the Naval Aide to the President) relating to President Kennedy. But, these are distance shots of the President with a huge crowd. In one of these, President Kennedy can be seen with his head lowered (79-PR-74). In addition, there is a photograph of the Kaiulani, a 225-foot, three masted merchant square rigger presented to the American people by the people of the Philippine Islands as a symbol of the warm and lasting friendship between the two nations. Also known as "The last Yankee Square-Rigger", the Kaiulani was lauched in Bath, Maine, in 1899, and used between 1899 and 1910 in the Hawaiian-California sugar trade before its long history carried it to Philippine Islands. The vessel was accepted by President Johnson on October 5, 1964, on behalf of the American people (79-PR-80 and 79-PR-81). There are two photographs of President Nixon. One of him and Robert Mayo, Director of the Budget, December 11, 1968, and the other shows Vice President Nixon among a crowd, 1956 (79-PR-84). Some of these photographs were taken by Abbie Rowe of the National Park Service. But, for most the photographer is unidentified and there are no captions or dates. See RG 79, Series AR "White House Photographs Taken by Abbie Rowe" for a brief biography of Abbie Rowe.
